You are at http://mailstar.net/ambivalence.html.
Readers who study this site thoroughly will realise that a certain amount of contradictory material is presented. That's because the truth is not always clear; and also because it's beneficial to "read around the topic", seeing a variety of viewpoints.
There's a story from India about four blind-folded men feeling an elephant. One felt the trunk, one the tail, one a leg, one another part. Each got a different impression.
You and I empathise with these four men because we "see" the elephant. But in this website, I am blindfolded like those four men. However, I am privileged to be able to interview each of them, and to assemble their impressions of the elephant.
In particular, I am ambivalent about Stalin. I think him the most enigmatic figure of the twentieth century: stalin.html.
I have a deep fear of the Red Terror, the thought police & repression of dissident views in the hardline Communist countries. Equally, I'm sure I would have run foul of the authorities in Nazi Germany. If a totalitarian state emerges in the West, I expect to "disappear".
Yet "Liberal Democracy" is failing us too, destroying the knowledge of the past amongst our youth, and casting us into the Proletariat, as predicted in The Communist Manifesto: http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/26/176.html.
Russians who were glad to cast off Communism, having been betrayed by the economic advisers the West sent them, are now seeing some merit in Stalin. He shared responsibility for the murder of millions, yet he stole Communism from the Jewish conspirators who set it up, and made it Russian. In the end, the Jewish faction murdered him, to forestall another purge: death-of-stalin.html.
Trotsky, a leader of those conspirators, was more dangerous than Stalin, because Western Marxists and Globalists (e.g. H. G. Wells: wells-lenin-league.html) were more deceived by him. They have built an iconography around him, which hides his deeds from scrutiny: worst.html.
Australia, fortunately, has never had such a tyrannical system, although Aborigines must have seen the British in much the same way.
Australia had a pretty-much ideal economy in the 50s & 60s: we children growing up then had no idea how lucky we were. The economy was "market socialist", the sort that Japan had in the 70s & China has now: public ownership and control, with private opportunities as well.
Where did it come from?
Not from the League of Rights (a British Empire counterpart of the John Birch Society): it has constantly called for "limited decentralised government with "reduce[d] taxation", without monopolies either "public or private", whereas we had many public monopolies in those days: xLeague.html.
Not from the Trotskyist Left - the "Trotskyist" New Left has promoted Free Trade to destroy that national economy: xTrots.html.
Alfred Deakin had instituted Protectionism early in the 1900s, but the ideal economy of the 1950s was set up by the Chifley Labor Government. Even though that Government was anti-Communist, its socialist system may have been influenced by Stalin's "Socialism in One Country", at least as far as the public ownership & control of much of the economy was concerned.
This was later maintained by Jack McEwen under the label "Country Party Socialism"; it used subsidies to keep the inland rural areas equal in wealth and opportunities with the coastal cities.
That "market socialism" was destroyed by the "internationalism" of the Whitlam Government in 1972.
Whitlam commissioned a report by Nugget Coombs, which recommended abolishing the subsidies to rural Australia, and diverting the money into a massive welfare program instead; this report, implemented by Whitlam, destroyed the Australian heartland: australiana.html.
The push for Free Trade, i.e. the lowering of tariffs, began with "New Left" governments, Whitlam's in Australia and Kennedy's in America (hence the "Kennedy Round" of GATT talks).
However, the Menzies Government also played an important role in destroying the 50s economy, by passing the Double Taxation Act of 1953, officially called the INCOME TAX (INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS) ACT 1953, or as later amended the INCOME TAX (INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS) ACT 1953-1973. Researchers will also find it called the INTERNATIONAL TAX AGREEMENTS ACT, and it has many Schedules and Amending Acts, providing for agreements with other capitalist countries around the world. It is also called The INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS ACT, and there are associated Acts such as the INCOME AND FRINGE BENEFITS TAX (INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS) ACT, and the TAXATION LAWS AMENDMENT (FOREIGN INCOME) ACT.
Other amending and associated Acts are named the INCOME TAX (INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS) ACT 1974, the INTERNATIONAL TAX AGREEMENTS AMENDMENT ACT 1995, the INCOME TAX (DIVIDENDS AND INTEREST WITHHOLDING TAX) ACT, the TAXATION LAWS AMENDMENT (FOREIGN TAX CREDITS) ACT, the INCOME TAX (OFFSHORE BANKING UNITS) (WITHHOLDING TAX RECOUPMENT) ACT, the INCOME TAX (NON RESIDENT DIVIDENDS AND INTEREST) ACT, the INCOME TAX (MINING WITHHOLDING TAX) ACT, the INCOME TAX (FORMER NON-RESIDENT SUPERANNUATION FUNDS) ACT, the TAXATION LAWS AMENDMENT (FOREIGN INCOME) ACT, the INCOME TAX (DIVERTED INCOME) ACT, the INCOME TAX (DEFICIT DEFERRAL) AMENDMENT ACT, the INCOME TAX (DEFICIT DEFERRAL) ACT, etc.
In theory, these Double Taxation Acts protect Multi-national companies (including banks) from being taxed twice for the same activity, once in a Branch-office country and once in the Head-office country.
In practice, the Multi-national companies use Double-Taxation laws to facilitate profit-shifting. They set up offices in tax havens, where by accounting tricks they pretend that the value-adding activities are taking place, where they pay minimal or no tax, and where their true profit and asset statistics can be hidden from public scrutiny. As a result, national governments are starved of funds, and forced to beg or borrow from private banks, the IMF etc, as well as selling off their people's assets to the same rich people running the Multi-national companies and banks.
The Double Taxation Acts are among the most convoluted and complicated legislation of the Australian Parliament. Yet, by and large, the public has never heard of them - so much for "Democracy". A whole bevy of lawyers are needed to deal with such intricate details. Since these laws have taken our national sovereignty away, the elite have no wish for the public to find out about them.
Before World War II, there were no formal Double Taxation laws in Australia, but the same arrangements applied informally in regard to Britain. Later the agreement with Britain was formalised, and then from 1953 such laws were extended to the United States and other countries.
The Double Taxation Agreement Bill of 1953 was only vehemently opposed in parliament by Labor member Clyde Cameron (Hansard, 26 November 1953, p.601). Since then, opposition to it has been led by John Cumming and his "Austand" organisation: http://www.thegreataustralians.com.
Double Taxation Acts let Multi-national companies off the hook, and put you on.
After the fall of the USSR, we all thought we'd be better off. Instead we find increasing poverty, family breakup, the proliferation of gambling and factory-style prostitution, senseless wars, blitzkriegs in the name of "human rights", and a trend to thought-control.
The aim of the Free Trade movement is One World Government. It has two factions: (1) the Liberal Internationalist - see cobden.html (2) the Trotskyist - see classwar.html.
